Also, the Social Security Administration has come up with their list of most popular names of 2007. E's name is in the top 10...but A's, name is a fast riser up almost 100 spots from last year! She's a trendsetter, I tell you!
Other interesting things I learned while cruisng around the SSA site on my conference call.
- The big trend is boys name rhyming with "maiden". Dear lord, there are a lot of variations: Jayden (No. 18); Aiden (No. 27); Aidan (No. 54); Jaden (No. 76); Caden (No. 92); Kaden (No. 98); Ayden (No.102); Braden (No.156); Cayden (No.175); Jaiden (No.191); Kaiden (No. 220); Aden (No. 264); Caiden (No. 286); Braeden (No. 325); Braydon (No. 361); Jaydon (No. 415); Jadon (No. 423); Braiden (No. 529); Zayden (No. 588); Jaeden (No. 593); Aydan (No. 598); Bradyn (No. 629); Kadin (No. 657); Jadyn (No. 696); Kaeden (No. 701); Jaydin (No. 757); Braedon (No. 805); Aidyn (No. 818); Haiden (No. 820); Jaidyn (No. 841); Kadyn (No. 878); Jaydan (No. 887); Raiden (No. 931); and Adin (No. 983). What's so awesome about this is the quote in the press release:
Social Security spokesman Mark Lassiter indicated that the agency would resist any legislative efforts to standardize the spelling of these names.
I just think it's *hilarious* that it was even a consideration to try and make people back off the damn creative spellings. - People still love, love, love to name their twins with matchy names. All of the top 10 name pairs start with the same letter. And really, 38 parents named their twins Ella and Emma?!?!?! As a twin, whose sister is named with the same letter, I beg you STOP THE MADNESS!
- You can also see the top 100 names by state. It's interesting how that, even across a state there are pockets of popularity. For example, there were 80 Paiges born in 2004 in our state, but two of them are in E's class. Conversely, there are 3,500 girls born that were named one of the top 7 names in the state...and E is the only one in her class with one of those.
Which reminds me...I was wondering about this. For those of you that had picked out both a "boy" and a "girl" name when you were pregnant...do you keep the unused name for your next kid?
When I was pregnant with E, we had picked out our "boy" name, and if A was a boy she would have been named that. But my mother-in-law mentioned that she had three separate girl names picked out for each of her sons.
So there you have it...enough stuff to keep you busy for the morning.

Our girl name the first go round was Madeline. But it was used by three of our neighbors and my cousin by the time I was pregnant again, we were between Elizabeth and Julia for #2. Then we looked in the envelope and realized we better get another boys name, pronto. We didn't decide on G until after he was born. But R's name was decided by the time I was in my second trimester!!
that was a fun post. we we have kept the boy name for the next child... we have a few boy names that we were choosing from and we still would chose from them.
You lived with your parents after you graduated from college--what a loser. Even though they are wonderful people who, I'm am sure, gave you lots of freedom, did all your laundry and picked up after you.
Dad
We decided not to do same first letter names for the twins...however, Brady and Jackson are now very popular names. Dan wanted Harrison's name to be Brady, so we decided in the delivery room (Harrison's birth) that if we had another son, his name would be Brady...little did we know that we would have 2 more sons. I just loved the name Jack...it sounds so sweet to me. Dan wanted something a little more grown up sounding, so his name is actually Jackson, but we call him Jack. I just loved the name Harrison and now that is becoming popular too. Oh well! Since we are done, we will not be using our girl names-Lana, Jane or Lilly. Sorry to ramble!
Really loved this post! I am not good at picking out names (my cat was named Kitty Cat) and I wanted to name our daughter Adrian (as in Rocky...just did a post about that). So my hubby has named our kids. Our son's name took about 30 seconds to pick out- it is Hubby first name Hubby last name III. The girl name we picked out for our son is the name that we used for our daughter-very traditional, on the name lists for the last hundred years or so. I too am very interested in regionally popular names. There are some funny ones here in The South and lots of kr8tive spellings. See the article in Freakonomics regarding names for more name data fun.
It was pretty spot-on with names we would like, especially when I through Haven's very conservative middle name in (Clare). Otherwise it suggested some hippy-dippy things.
Our original names - Holden, Sadie, Blakely, Zander - didn't stand the test of time. I've always loved Max but we had a (still alive at that time) dog by that name.
AWESOME post! Our son was named after a round-table discussion (myself, my husband and a good friend) about a "Simpson's" episode. Our "girl" name at the time was "Macy" and we did not use it when we actually had a daughter with the next pregnancy. To be honest, I can't remember the boy names we picked...I know I wanted "Sawyer" because LOST had *just* come on the air, and my husband was like, "Uh...NO EFFING WAY." So that pretty much nixed that. He named our daughter, though.
we did have a girl name picked out, which i am still bummed i couldn't use.
(and i must admit i thought you were going to end this post with some news! )

I spent way too much time on those sites last week before we left for PA- and still have no name!!! We did not use one of our 'final choices' for girls from William when we had Julia, but the name was on the 'list'. William was named after my dad, so there was no question on that one! Not a fan of matchy names- a girl I know just had a Noah, and she already has a Noelle. Too close for comfort in my book- yet am I half of Jenny and Jessie, so I can't really say it was the worst thing ever!
Pictures are working again, my friend!!!
